Well, the problem can be many thing's like how much ram do you have now and what did the specs say for the ram you paid for?

Well depends if you have a 32 or 64 bits version, and if your motherboard has the right support for it.
A 32 version, u can put in 4 gigs, but it will only support 3.2 or something
a 64 version can support up to 8 gigs.
AND ALSO, if you have different mhz on the ram, for example you first had 1066 mhz,
and put a 600 or 800 mhz in, then it will declock the other ram also to 600/800.
so that will make it a lil sloweR.
Good lucK.

That can be wrong from times to times because im runing a 32bit right now that can support 8 gigs of ram and I can run a 64bit also.

And thats all on the same computer.

RAM is more complicated then they seem to be now. There is the format of ddr, ddr2, and ddr3. There is different speed, and different latency on the ram too.

The possible reason of the slow down might be:
The 512 ram is slower than the rest of ram
The size of 512mb is inefficient comparing to the larger size installed in other slots
DDR2 ram are recommended to run in pairs to provide better performance

just my .02
